Know who is calling.

An unknown number rings. OwlCaller shows a name instead of a stranger — drawn from a directory that the people using the app build together.

What it does

Names on incoming calls

A number nobody in your phone knows arrives with a name attached, before you decide whether to pick up.

Spam, flagged by people

Nuisance numbers are reported by users and labelled. On iPhone the worst offenders can be silenced before the phone rings.

Look a number up

Got a missed call from a number you do not recognise? Search it and see what the directory knows.

Tidy your contacts

Finds duplicates, numbers too short to dial and entries saved without a name, and lets you clear them out.

How it works

Verify your number

A code arrives by WhatsApp, or by SMS if you do not use it. No password to invent or forget.

Allow the permissions

The app explains what each one is for. Nothing leaves your phone until you say yes, and you can take it back later.

Answer with confidence

Unknown callers arrive named where the directory knows them, and flagged where enough people have complained.

The exchange, stated plainly

OwlCaller identifies callers because its users share the names in their phonebooks. Your contacts help name callers for other people, and theirs name callers for you. That is the whole mechanism, and the app says so on the screen where it asks.

If you would rather not be part of it, you can take your number out — no account, no app, no email to anybody.

Questions

Where do the names come from?

From the phonebooks of people using OwlCaller. They are typed by strangers, so they are sometimes abbreviated, out of date or simply wrong — a name here is a strong hint, never proof of identity.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes, with one difference Apple imposes on every app of this kind: iOS does not give apps access to your call history, so none is collected there. Call labelling is switched on under Settings → Apps → Phone → Call Blocking & Identification.

Can I see who searched for my number?

No. Lookups are not shown to the person being looked up, and there is no way to buy that information.

I do not want my number in it.

Then it should not be. Removal is self-service, needs no account, and deletes every name held for the number rather than hiding it — the privacy policy explains exactly what happens.
